A refractometer is a measuring instrument used to measure the density of liquids, gases and solids from the beginning of the refraction of light originating in the boundary layer between the prism and the sample.

The digital refractometer measures in a matter of seconds and displays accurate measurement results. By its own light source, the measurement error, in the case of the optical refractometer by artificial light (e.g. fluorescent lamps) can arise. The refractometer can be used to analyze the degree of concentration of refrigerants, thickeners, etc. The refractometer is an optical instrument of high precision and simple handling, it is based on the refraction of light when passing through a prism, to determine the magnitude to be measured only a small sample is needed, thus being a very useful instrument that every professional should have (conversion of refractometer units). Our refractometer models have ATC except the PCE-SG model and have automatic temperature compensation.

Its objective is to analyze different substances present in a matter and identify each component to evaluate its degree of purity. The first that existed was the Abbe refractometer, which emerged in the early twentieth century and is still used today.

Types of refractometers

In the market you can distinguish two types of refractometers. These are Abbe's and digital. Each has a different system to detect the refractive index of light when analyzing substances.

The Abbe Refractometer

This refractometer bases its operation on the reflection of light, which allows to analyze the properties of a substance such as density. It also detects the concentration of soluble solids such as salts, proteins, acids or sugar.

However, the Abbe refractometer can only measure solutions with a refractive index below that indicated on Flint glass, so this limitation is solved by correcting the temperature with a thermostat integrated into the optical system.

According to the application of this type of refractometer,different scales of measurement of percentages can be identified, which are the Brix, the Baumé and the Mash Sacch degrees.

The digital refractometer

Thanks to technological advances, digital refractometersemerged. These facilitate the analysis of the contents of glucose, maltose and lactose present in various substances more quickly, comfortably and accurately.

This type of refractometer offers many advantages, such as eliminating the need to write down data manually. This is because it has a screen where the results are thrown along with the temperature of the samples and stored in the memory of the PC.

An example of a refractometer that we can mention is the RXA Refractometer, which calculates the refractive index plus the density to proceed with the quality control of industrial products such as perfumes, soft drinks and even fuel.

Uses and applications of the refractometer in productive environments

The use of the refractometer is very wide. This is how we can see that, in oenology, it is used to analyze the sugar content and potential degree of alcohol that varies according to the ripening of the fruits.

In the chemical industry, the refractometer controls the quality of detergents, air fresheners, emulsions and other chemicals. And in the food sector, juices, dairy, sauces and refined sugar are analyzed.

Having a good digital refractometer will optimize the calculation process and improve the production of your industry.

Some refractometer models are equipped with different scales for various measurement units. The visible dividing line between the blue and white fields tells you the result. For example, with the Oechsle - Winzer refractometer you can measure in ºOe, Brix and Babo. The refractometer for beekeeping with help method for quick definition at work. If you want to determine with the help of the refractometer concentrations of suspensions or aqueous solutions that do not appear explicitly in the above list (e.g. of a suspension with dyes), this is not a problem. You will need to measure only once a test of the liquid with a refractometer (e.g. PCE-032).
