The Vibrometer is a measuring instrument used to measure the determination of the magnitudes that characterize the occurrence of vibrations. This equipment is basically used for the preventive and predictive maintenance of production machines.

It is widely used in large industries, where it is necessary to know how a certain machinery is behaving and which components could be suffering wear to ensure their proper operation.

Through the Vibrometer it is possible to diagnose equipment failures accurately to apply the corresponding measures before the machinery collapses. Its great usefulness is obvious.

What is a Vibrometer?

Vibrometersare instruments that measure vibrations, oscillations and disturbances in industrial machines and systems. Vibrometerstransform equal mechanical movements and give relevant information on the operating conditions of the machine, either as a whole, and for each of its parts and components.

Among its fundamental parameters for measuring vibration are:

· Vibration acceleration

· Vibration speed

· Displacement

· Vibration spectrum

The Vibrometer has a laser that focuses on the surface to be measured. Through the Doppler effect, the frequency of the laser light displayed varies if the focused surface is shifted and esa frequency is measured with the Vibrometer.

The Doppler effect

The physical principle of the operation of a Vibrometer is based on the Doppler effect, named after Christian Doppler who was the first to apply it to sound in 1842. This effect states that, if an observer at rest observes a source of waves moving in the direction of it, the waves that reach that observer undergo a shortening in their wavelength increasing their frequency.

Conversely, if the source moves away from the observer, the wavelength of the waves reaching the observer increases, therefore the frequency decreases.

What is the Vibrometer for?

Vibrations are the result of the diffusion of forces that produce wear and tear in dynamic machines. In that sense, part of the energy produced by the force is dissipated outside the machine, thanks to its fastening, joining and support elements.

This dissipation of force makes it possible to measure the phenomenon of vibration. Keeping these vibrational forces within margins or limits is critical. When the vibration forces are not kept constant, within limits, dynamic effects begin to appear in the machine that, as a consequence, generates a modification of the vibration spectrum.
