That is why, to know the way in which this unique instrument works, it is necessary to break down each of the informative and qualitative aspects of the tachometer.

What is a Tachometer?

The tachometeris a measuring instrument that is used in rotating elements, to determine the number of turns that it makes on its own axis and, therefore, is also accompanied by the speed of these.

The unit of measurement of the tachometer,are the revolutions per minute (RPM), because it must be understood that revolutions means turns, then they would be the numbers of turns that the element makes, for each minute.

The word tachometer has an origin in the Greek vocabulary, the prefix "Tacko" means speed or high speed and for its part, the suffix "Metron" translates as measure. So, this is why I tell you that the tachometer is an instrument that measures speed.

The tachometer is a transcendental tool, since it is very useful to be able to know the effort, to which the engine is subjected once it begins to work, which is vital to ensure the durability of this element.

The variables that can be measured using a tachometerinclude the RPM of engines, turbines, the speed that exist on surfaces, among others. In addition, they are used to be able to make annotations of the different speeds of any of these rotating elements.

The tachometeris also a preventive instrument, since it is used to make records, the quality of turns, study the properties and speeds of engines or turbines primarily. In this way, we can take the different corrective measures, in case of detecting faults or failing that, check the product guarantees.

From a generator

Motors with ignition systems usually use a generator connected to the transmission shaft of the engine, therefore, more than a tachometer is a voltmeter or voltage meter, which means that it measures the voltage pulsations in the ignition system. The output voltage is proportional to the shaft speed so the voltage measurement becomes an accurate measurement in revolution per minute (RPM).

From a laser

The laser tachometer is one of the most popular today, because it does not need contact with the motor shaft, but works by means of an infrared light towards the axis. This type of tachometer measures the rate at which light is reflected back on the tachometer.

Types of tachometers

We can talk about two types of tachometers:

Analog: consisting of a needle and an interface dial, marking the speed with an odometer disc to finally mark it on the screen. Just like a watch.

Digital: consisting of an LCD or LED screen and a memory for storage, providing numerical readings instead of using quadrants and needles.

Parts of a tachometer

Magnet: the most important part of the tachometer,allows to comply with all the operation, by means of a magnetic field to carry out the markings.

Spiral spring: allows to cushion the torsion with a spiral shape.

Transmission organ: transmits the data obtained in the rotation of the magnet.

Endless screw: communicates the movement between the axes.

Drive shaft: union between the motor drive sector and the tap changer.

Rings: it has several rings, but the most important is the one dragged by the magnetic field of the magnet to make the marking on the screen.

Display: the information that is broken down on the disc of the dashboard of the car, using kilometric units, a needle and a scale.
