A pressure gauge is an analog indicator used to measure the pressure of a gas or liquid, such as water, oil, or air. Unlike traditional pressure transducers, these are analog devices with a circular dial and a mechanically driven pointer that have been in use for decades.

In many modern applications the analog manometer is being replaced by digital pressure gaugeswith a digital display and additional features, such as alarm incorporation and analog, digital or wireless relay of the indicated value.

Digital pressure gaugesare often manufactured on a process housing medium that is similar in size and shape to traditional analogue pressure gauges,making them interchangeable.

Applications for pressure gauge

The pressure gauge is among the most widely used instruments in a plant. They can be compromised due to their large number, attention to maintenance and reliability. As a consequence, it is not uncommon for older plants to see many pressure gaugesand out-of-service switches.

If a plant is operated with a damaged pressure switch, the safety of the plant can be compromised. Conversely, if a plant operates safely while a pressure gauge is defective, it is shown that the pressure gauge was not needed in the first instance.

Therefore, a goal for a good process instrumentation design is to install fewer but more useful and more reliable pressure gaugesand switches.

One way to reduce the number of pressure gaugesin a plant is to stop installing them by default (such as placing a pressure gaugein the discharge of each pump). Instead, review the need for each device individually.

During the review you should ask: "What am I going to do with the reading of this pressure gauge?"and install one only if there is a logical answer to the question. If a pressure gauge only indicates that the pump is working, it is not necessary, since one can hear and see the status of it.

If the pressure gauge indicates the pressure (or pressure drop) in the process, esa information is valuable only if something can be done about it (such as cleaning a filter), otherwise it is useless. If one approaches the specification of pressure gaugeswith this mentality, the number of pressure gaugesused will be reduced. If a plant uses fewer indicators but better, reliability will increase

Considerations for pressure gauge design

The two most common reasons for the failure of a mechanical pressure gauge are tube vibrations and condensation of water, as in colder climates it can freeze and damage the meter cover. The delicate links, pivots and sprockets of a traditional analog pressure gauge are sensitive to both condensation and vibration.

The life of the oil pressure gauge is longer, not only because it has fewer moving parts, but because its housing is filled with a viscous oil or glycerin. This oil filler is beneficial not only because it dampens cutting-edge vibrations, but also because it leaves no room for moist air to enter. As a result, water cannot condense and accumulate.

When using digital pressure gauges,energy availability, battery life, ambient temperature/process temperature, humidity and shock/vibration must be considered.
