What is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things is a translation of the English expression Internet of Things(IoT),which describes a scenario in which various things connect and communicate. This technological innovation aims to connect the articles we use daily to the Internet, with the aim of bringing the physical world closer to the digital world.
When we talk about "things," we mean anything. We are already used to using the Internet with smartphones, computers, Smart TVs and video games, but in this context the idea is not to have another means of Internet connection itself, but to make the devices more efficient. In addition to contributing to optimize natural resources, for health and countless other opportunities.

How IoT works

In a simple way, the Internet of Things deals with objects connected to each other through the network. They exchange information to facilitate or create various actions. For something like this to happen, there is a set of three factors that must be combined for an app to work within the concept of the Internet of Things. These are: devices, the network and a control system.

IoT Industrial

The term Industrial IoT focuses on the application of the advantages offered by the IoT to the industrial and business spheres. In other words, all the machinery of an Industry Connected to the Internet thanks to the capture of data that comes from sensors and devices.

Until recently, the industry incorporated machine-to-machine connectivity (M2M) to achieve automation. However, the emergence of technologies such as Machine Learning or Analytics added in the cloud have rejuvenated this field with new business models that will greatly affect the way of understanding the Industry as such.

This new stage is known as Industry 4.0 or even the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Industry 4.0 areas and use cases

According to the Industrial IoT Consortium, the areas of Industry 4.0 are:

Energy: Through the power grid, connected devices can offer all kinds of information.

eHealth: IoT is transforming healthcare both in one's own homes and in equipment and services.

Transport or Smart Retail: Connected vehicles to predict, monitor, control and track assets.

Smart Buildings: Focused on improving sustainability through the management and efficient use of building resources.

Agriculture: Another area in which the IoT plays a fundamental role. Farmers will be able to study crops, optimize resources and reduce costs.

Manufacturing and Industry: as we have explained above, the advantages of IoT are focused on improving the productivity and safety of workers, minimizing costs and achieving benefits.

Among these areas that fall within the competence of Industry 4.0, some of the use cases to be applied would be:

Intelligent storage applications.

Predictive and remote maintenance. Monitoring of manufacturing equipment.

Connected logistics. Asset tracking. Load control.

Smart agriculture.

Optimization of energy resources.
