When we talk about brightness, we refer to this particularity as the visual effect that the surface of an object has when the projected light is reflected in a specific way.

In fact, brightness has to do with the amount of reflected direct light returned by an object, and the more of it, the greater the perception of brightness for the human eye.

If we compare the different surfaces that objects can have, those with a smoother and polished outer layer will reflect much sharper than those with rougher surfaces. In this way the smooth and polished surfaces reflect the light as if they were a mirror, and therefore the brightness effect is high. This occurs because the impacted light is reflected directly and compactly in one direction, and the angle of incidence is equal to that of reflection.

On the other hand, when we project a ray of light on a rough surface it scatters out in all directions. In this way the quality and sharpness of the projected image decreases and appears diffusely. On these types of surfaces, a reflected object no longer appears bright but blurred. The beam of light splits and follows a main direction, giving the object a matte appearance.

The glitterometer is an instrument that determines the brightness on different materials. During measurement, the rillometer detects the reflection of the light beam. The grillometer itself sends the light. Some of the light is reflected on the surface, while another part is absorbed by the surface. The glitter calculates the degree of brightness according to the reflected light

How to measure brightness with a glitterometer:

Brightness meters or glossometersare a range of instruments that are used to measure the specular reflection of a body or surface.

Specular reflection has a direct relationship between the proportion of incident light and reflected light, and this has been used as a principle for standardization and measurement of brightness values.

At present there are different international standards that define the methodology and technical specifications of glossometersfor the measurement of brightness in different types of materials and surfaces.

High precision rillometers that you can find in our market place. Color and brightness are important parameters in the analysis of surface properties of materials or components.

The glossometer can be used on all smooth surfaces (e.g. stone, wood, laminate, rubber floors etc.), whether treated or untreated. Principle of operation of the glossometer (IG series): Brightness is measured by the reflection of the beam of light that penetrates a surface. The analysis is performed via the ratio of the force of the light reflected from the point of impact on an internal reflective plate.

According to regulations, the gloss value on a glass surface, with a fixed calculation coefficient of 1,567, must have the reference value of 100 as an output or as an indication on the glossometer. As a reference surface for calibration, a black glass plate with a brightness value of 90° at a measurement of 60°, and 84 at a measurement of 20°, is used. You can buy the rillometer in our online store.
